SUGG and the city:

A moving start-up story

Funky colours, a compact build, the flair of a perfect city companion—SUGG bikes are turning heads all around Brussels. And that's just what founder Frédéric Mertens aimed for when he turned his quirky idea into reality in 2021. Let's take a look at how it all started.

The idea: a bike as tiny and simple as a scooter, how hard can it be?

When scooters became popular around 2018, Frédéric very much enjoyed seeing them around the city. They're fast, easy, make people leave their car behind more and they evoke a joyful nostalgic feeling, as if you're back in the schoolyard.

The downside is that only the electric version is truly efficient. Bikes don't need electricity to be an efficient vehicle, but they are not as portable and easy. What if we could make a bike as tiny, practical and simple as a scooter?
Let's make our streets more efficient, joyful, clean, silent, safe and modern.

The philosophy: a more liveable city, one little bike at a time

Frédéric found that his idea perfectly suited the new era of mobility in big cities. People are sick of aggressive cars and tired of telling their kids to be careful outside. They want an urban life with less pollution, less noise, more respect and a greater environmental consciousness.

Unfortunately, his colleagues at Ahooga, an electric folding bike brand, didn't see the same potential. So Frédéric waited a while and after Ahooga was sold, he kicked off his new endeavour in 2021.

The design: one of a kind, one size fits all

The mini bike has a few unique, well-thought-out features. The first: the 16-inch wheels—a lot smaller than those of a 28-inch city bike, but thicker and more robust. Giving the bike a sturdy look.

Next is the short, stiff and comfortable steel frame. Compact enough to easily store and carry, so no need for a complex folding mechanism.

Lastly, its signature yellow colour, recently joined by 4 other joyful shades. If you can agree on a favourite, the bike will fit anyone in your family if you adjust the seat!

The production:
let's keep it local

When it came to making the bike, Frédéric was keen to keep on the sustainable and socially responsible path.

The parts are mainly sourced from European manufacturers. Frames and wheels are made in the Czech Republic, many other components come from Germany. If it can't be European, we take into account the democratic state of the country we partner with.

The design and assembly fully happen in the workshop in the heart of Brussels. Thus creating local jobs, which is important in a city where unemployment is high.
From the name to the frame, I was inspired by my family in every way

The inspiration:
a full circle family story

Thinking back on his journey, Frédéric found that a lot of his inspiration came from his childhood. Like his Swedish grandfather Thure's old bike. Still solid and simply elegant, after 50 years. Or maybe the Raleigh Grifter BMX bike he rode as a kid had something to do with it.

So when he needed a name for the brand, it had to be a family heirloom too: his mother's last name—Sugg. Soon there will be no one left with that name in Belgium. So every one of our feisty little bikes carries her legacy.
